anical or electronic systems.

* Thomas Edison: A letter from Thomas Edison from 1878 has been preserved, in which he writes about the process of testing his inventions and notes that “bugs” (flaws) appear in the system, the elimination of which takes time and intensive work.

2. The first real “bug” in a computer (1947). The popularization of the term and its direct connection with computing technology is associated with the pioneer of computer science — Grace Hopper.

Fact: On September 9, 1947 (according to some sources, in 1945), while working on the Harvard Mark II computer at Harvard University, operators discovered that the system was malfunctioning.

Reason: Upon inspection, it was discovered that a real insect—a moth—was stuck in one of the electromechanical relays.

Result: The insect was carefully removed, placed in the operator's logbook with tweezers, and noted next to it: "First actual case of bug being found."

Conclusion: The term "bug" had existed in engineering jargon to denote a defect before, but the discovery of a real insect in a computer relay by Grace Hopper's team finally established the word and made it the term we use today to denote errors in software.
